Inside the Ovade liquefaction development

From wellhead gas conditioning to cold box commissioning: the engineering sequence behind the Oghara/Ovade train.

Liquefaction at small scale is an exercise in discipline. The thermodynamics are settled; the difficulty is delivering a plant that starts reliably, runs unattended overnight and tolerates the gas quality it is actually given rather than the gas quality in the design basis.

1. Gas conditioning

Feed gas arrives with water, CO2 and heavier hydrocarbons. Each of these freezes inside a cryogenic exchanger, so pre-treatment is non-negotiable: amine or adsorbent CO2 removal to single-digit ppm, molecular sieve dehydration, and heavy hydrocarbon knockout. Pre-treatment failures, not cold-end failures, are what shut small trains down.

2. Liquefaction

The refrigeration cycle drives conditioned gas down to roughly -162°C inside the cold box, where it condenses into LNG at close to atmospheric pressure. Compressor selection, exchanger approach temperatures and turndown capability determine whether the plant can follow demand instead of running flat out and flaring the difference.

3. Storage and loading

  • Vacuum-insulated cryogenic storage sized to buffer both production upsets and tanker scheduling.
  • Boil-off management so that stored product is recovered rather than vented.
  • A loading gantry with dry-break couplings, mass metering and grounding interlocks.
  • Fire and gas detection with automatic isolation across the liquefaction, storage and loading areas.

4. Commissioning

Cool-down is the moment the design meets reality. The train is purged, dried and brought down in controlled steps to avoid thermal shock, while instrumentation, trips and the emergency shutdown logic are proven at temperature. Only after a sustained on-spec production run does the plant transition to routine operations.

Capacity on a nameplate is a claim. Availability across a quarter is the number customers actually buy.

What it unlocks

The Oghara/Ovade facility anchors the delivery rings that reach Delta, Edo, Rivers, Ondo and the wider South-West industrial corridor. Storage capacity at the plant is what converts a production asset into a dependable supply service — it is the reason a customer 300km away can hold a fixed delivery slot.
